Archiving Atlanta

 Archival Projects of Atlanta:
These projects are coauthored by students currently attending the Georgia Institute of Technology. This digital archive of Atlanta is based strictly on the learning materials given over the period of two weeks. Each author has analyzed the city's past, present, and/or future from two distinct perspectives. To accomplish this, the authors used secondary research and materials presented in class; as well as, sourcing photographs, videos, and audio. From topics concerning Atlanta's criminal history to Atlanta's placement in a zombie apocalypse: this is a portfolio of Atlanta as seen through the lens of diverse perspectives of Georgia Tech. We have linked these artifacts below with the respective title, authors, and concise introduction.

The Archival Showcase

Atlanta in 4

Natasha Setiadi and Dustin Bonk

Atlanta's origin story contains no inspiring tales of settlers traversing the oceans or the promise of riches and a new life seen in other large U.S. cities—Atlanta 1.0 was just the end of the line for railroads going south. General Sherman burnt the city to the ground in 1864, and Georgia's Reconstruction government founded a trade school near its northern border in 1885.

The 1996 Olympic Resurgens foretold by the city's seal has ushered in a second Silicon Valley with global reach and importance—but not without a cultural history influenced by immigration and racism. We present Atlanta in 4: divided by its own highways.

Atlanta: An Overview

Drew Flint & Ishani Spanier

In this archive of Atlanta, we have set out to better understand this nuanced city through the Atlanta Child Murders, the growing professional atmosphere in the city, southern food culture, and the city’s representation in popular culture as the “zombie capital of the world”. In this archive, there are informational texts, images, links to interactive websites, and a montage celebrating these diverse aspects of the city.

An Archive of Atlanta

Alexis Laryczower & Abby Hartman

Atlanta is a city with many different sides. The city has a rich history that has shaped it into a vibrant and diverse world leader. It is a place where there is groundbreaking research in medicine and technology, but also a place where people from all cultures can share their cuisine and art. In collaboration with different organizations, agencies, and universities, Atlanta is barreling toward a modern and inclusive future.

The Environment of a City

Aidan Parsa and Josh Meighan

Atlanta is a complex enigma that has constantly been changing and developing since it was founded in 1847. This urban center has a rich history founded in all aspects of life: human rights, crime, foreign culture, and so on. This assignment will explain Atlanta in the context of zombies, serial killing, technology, and art, four things that have nothing to do with each other, but are woven into the culture of the city of Atlanta.

Atlanta: Art, Tech, Crime, and Zombies

Jasper Seabold and Tyson Brown

Atlanta is known as the city too busy to hate but not too busy to care, and there's no other city quite like it. Below are four of the many aspects that define Atlanta and make it unique.

Atlanta Through Different Lenses

Chanh Nguyen & Ashlynn Gannon

In order to create a cohesive depiction of Atlanta under four completely separate lenses, including its art, population, growing technology hub, and criminal history, this archive of Atlanta focuses on the ways in which those four characteristics all individually impact, whether positively or negatively, the culture of the city. Through its market places, we observe the diverse population that inhabits the city, while through its technology hub we see the significant ways in which Atlanta is paving the way for the future. In its art we see the diverse and quirky ways that certain individuals express themselves, while in its crime history we see the biases and injustices that are interlaced within the darker parts of this city.

Atlanta: The City that Inspires

Arya Bhargava & Srijan Ponnala

The purpose of this project is to explain how Atlanta is a city that can inspire anyone, from an artist to a future software developer. Through these archives of the four included facets of Atlanta, it shows how the CDC’s zombie apocalypse preparedness, Atlanta’s street art, the booming startup culture, and the food culture all inspire people who aim to specialize in those areas. Thus, this archive shows how Atlanta is the prime city to be in for any type of person.

The Influence of Race and Class

Madison Stephens & Machayla Randall

When it comes to Atlanta, it is important to discuss race and class when it comes to the culture of the city. The rich diversity floods the city and infiltrates every aspect. At the same time, there is a large variety of economic situations between communities. In this presentation, we want to highlight the effects of race and class when it comes to the criminal history and the art scene in Atlanta.

Atlanta: Visualizing the Cityscape

Will Golder & Jason Jagielo

Atlanta: The Epicenter of the South. Although Atlanta has remained prominent throughout history, the culture remains dynamic and fluid thanks to the individuals that call the city home. Atlanta has rapidly grown into a tech hub, courtesy of companies like Google and Microsoft moving here while continuing to push for increased diversity. Looking towards Atlanta's past, the Atlanta Child Murders represent an often overlooked part of the city's criminal history, while Atlanta's role as an organic environment to produce musical talent ensures that the city will have a bright future in the limelight.

Memorizing the Atlantic City

Wonho Lim, Robert Hudson Higgins, Joshua Hanks

History, culture, and science. There are only a few cities that are famous for all these three components in the entire world. Those cities are highly appreciated by people, organizations, and the government from various areas, and take a major role in society. Atlanta is also one of those cities which has a rich history and culture, along with prosperous industry. As a home of Martin Luther King, Jr., the Walking Dead Series, and the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta has reigned as one of the most vibrant and busiest cities in the United States. This special artifact explores the past, current, and future of Atlanta in various areas for archiving this beautiful city.
